Ash Wednesday

Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of the Season of Lent. It is a season of penance, reflection, and fasting which prepares us for Christ’s Resurrection on Easter Sunday, through which we attain redemption.

Our foreheads are marked with ashes to humble our hearts and remind us that life passes away on Earth.  The ashes are a symbol of penance made sacramental by the blessing of the Church, and they help us develop a spirit of humility and sacrifice.
The ashes are made from the palms blessed at the Palm Sunday celebration of the previous year.  They are christened with Holy Water.  Whilst the ashes symbolise penance and contrition, they are also a reminder that God is gracious and good to those who call on Him with repentant hearts.

LENT STUDY GROUP

An Exploration Of Identity

At Saint Martin’s are we Anglican?  Catholics?

What does this even mean?

Explore the liturgical and theological changes experienced in the parish as a result of the Oxford Movement, set in the context of a wider history of the English Church from the Reformation to the present day and the issues we now face.

Every Wednesday throughout Lent starting on 25th February at 7:30pm.  Hosted by Fr Victor Bullock at the vicarage.

Faith, doubt – and Jesus

BUILD ON THE ROCK (Matthew 7.24) starts by looking at faith and doubt. Is it wrong – or is it normal and healthy – for a Christian to have doubts? Is there any evidence for a God who loves us? We hear from many witnesses.  At the heart of a Christian answer stands Jesus himself.

We consider his ‘strange and beautiful story’ and reflect upon his teaching, his death, his resurrection and his continuing significance.

The study group meets every Wednesday evening in the vestry hall following a short compline at 7:30pm.

Please note that there will be a small charge of £3.50 to cover the cost of the booklet you will need.

Sign up for the study group on the list at back of church, or contact Father Victor.
